Severity of sting : some sea urchins have a toxic sting.
Treatment : in most cases the body either absorbs spine fragments in 24 hours to 3 weeks, or they work themselves out through the skin. most wounds heal in about one month. Applying heat for pain control is unproven. Victims with generalized weakness, shortness of breath, and/or nausea and vomiting after a puncture should go directly to an emergency facility.
Severity of sting : in most instances the toxin is not harmful but it usually causes a sharp burning sensation.
Treatment : if a person is stung by a jellyfish, avoid washing the site with fresh water, since this causes any remaining stinging cells to swell and discharge. Vinegar or meat tenderiser applied to the affected area will reduce the stinging by destroying the protein-based venom, while alcohol, including methylated spirits or liquor, fixes the cells and sterilizes the wound. Soaking in very hot water can bring relief. If there is any sign of an alergic reaction you should get medical attention.
Severity of sting : in most instances the toxin is not harmful but it does cause pain.
Treatment : if you are stung by a bluebottle, avoid washing the site with fresh water, since this causes any remaining stinging cells to swell and discharge. Remove any pieces of tentacle and wash carefully in salt water. Treatment with vinegar and ice, or soaking the wound in very hot water, usually brings relief. Some people can show signs of severe allergic reaction—low blood pressure, rapid pulse and breathing difficulty, this requires emergency treatment. Breathing trouble is more likely in asthmatics, children, and people known to be allergic to bluebottle venom. Any sign of chest tightness or breathing trouble is a good reason to immediately get medical attention.
A cone shell is a popular shell for shell collectors but be careful—if there is still a slug inside it can shoot out it’s arrow-like teeth which it uses to inject and paralyse it’s prey with venom.
Severity of sting : some large species of cones have toxins potent enough to kill people.
Treatment : Urgent medical attention.
